Before Parliament went on recess one of the interesting things that happened was the passage of the electronic levy. After so much brouhaha about the e-levy since November last year, the Majority had their way and passed the levy after the Minority had staged a walkout. The bill which was later assented to by President Akufo-Addo will come into force from May 1.
The Minority side under the leadership of Haruna Iddrisu, Mahama Ayariga and Okudzeto Ablakwa filed a motion at the Supreme Court last week and challeneged the validity of the law. The Supreme Court will hear the case on May 4, but the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah has been speaking on the issue. In an interview he noted that nothing will come out of the Supreme Court ruling and called the writ an exercise in futility.
Okudzeto Ablakwa, one of the sponsors of the writ has however cited his colleague MP and senior in Parliament for contempt. According to him, it was not prudent for Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu to have made prejudicial comments even before the Supreme Court starts hearing of the case. He noted that Osei Kyei should have known better. Okudzeto mentioned that the Minority will cite the Majority Leader for contempt.
In another development, Okudzeto also mentioned that the GRA boss will also be cited for contempt for receiving the Minority’s court injunction summons and yet declaring he will go ahead and implement the e-levy
